The cheap way to change a kitchen
The cabinets in this kitchen were solid oak and in good shape. Replacing them would have been most of the budget and none of the difference — what was dating the room was the counter and the wall behind it.
So the tops came off and the cabinet boxes stayed. Butcher block went on, which wants a proper seal and a slow start but gives you a warm counter you can sand back in ten years instead of replacing. The backsplash is white subway run wall to wall, up past where the old one stopped.
The upper cabinet beside the window came out for a pair of floating shelves. That's the change people notice, and it cost almost nothing.
